JBL Control 2.4G On Air Wireless Speaker System Review

star star star star

The Bose 161 Bookshelf Speaker System offers perfect rear channel support, second room accessory sound or main speaker use in a small room. The Bose name is synonymous with big sound filling a room and being directed in a wide spread from a small device. I remember seeing my first Bose speaker system and thinking it was some kind of a joke … until the stereo was turned on! Big sound, long-lasting durability in small form has always been their mantra, and it holds true here.

The compact, stylish looking Bose 161 Bookshelf Speaker System is a pair or speakers, black in color with a curved housing on one end and regular squared other end that are very distinct looking. They are as distinctively unique on the sound side as well, delivering two to three times the clarity and volume as similarly sized units. These speakers use design and functionality to look right at home sitting on a book shelf or desktop, or installed permanently on a wall.

The sound delivery is room-filling spacious (small to medium room), and the sound is balanced and rich anywhere in the room, using as little as 10 watts per channel, and up to 100 watts. Unlike most speakers, Bose protects their speakers with Automatic Protection Circuitry that ensures the speaker drivers will not be pushed too hard and overdriven. This adds reliability and care-free peace of mind when you really want to crank them up and enjoy what this compact pair can do.

If you are planning on employing the Bose 161 Bookshelf Speaker pair in a home theater application, you should know that they were actually designed to fit perfectly into any Direct/Reflecting Bose speaker system, as well as work divinely with the Bose VCS-10 center-channel speaker.

All Bose speakers throw sound out over the entire available listening are. The Bose 161s accomplish this with Articulated Array positioning of the speaker driver coupled with their Stereo Everywhere technology. The two 2.5 in. Twiddler drivers in each speaker push more air out of their compact enclosures, which gives you twice the sound you would expect from such a small pair of speakers.

With these speakers, as with all quality speaker sets, you can lose tons of sound if you are not using the right length and gauge of speaker wire. For 30 feet lengths, use at least 18 gauge, 16 gauge for 45 feet, and 14 gauge for 70 feet speaker wire runs. The accompanying mounting brackets allow for a multitude of mounting options.

The bottom line is, you just can’t go wrong with Bose technology. You will pay more money almost every time, but you will still get more than what you paid for. If you are looking for the most economical answer in a small pair of speakers, this is not the set for you. But if you want to add an amazing rear channel to a home theater system, or power sound for a small to medium room, you just won’t find better sound reproduction for the size and money than the Bose 161 Bookshelf Speaker System.

Creative GigaWorks T20W Wireless Speaker System Review

star star star star

The Creative GigaWorks T20W Series II wireless multimedia speaker system allows you to enjoy your favorite tunes, radio programs, sports and talk radio anywhere. These two speakers are simple to use. You just plug them into any standard home wall socket, and they seek out and find a signal being broadcast via their dedicated channel from a Creative GigaWorks transmitter, and you have sound up to 100 feet from the transmitter. There is no need to have a home network or internet access, these proprietary multimedia speakers receive the high quality broadcast from a GigaWorks Sound Blaster Wireless system or Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook ExpressCard 34.

The speakers automatically detect the GigaWorks transmitter you are using, so there is no complicated hookup, no wires to run, and no interfering with any current home network or cordless telephone system you currently own. If the Creative GigaWorks T20W Series II Wireless speakers are plugged into an electrical outlet and are within 100 feet of your transmitter, you have sound.

Or, you can also use these rugged speakers as you would any other standard pair of speakers, and wire them into any sound system. With the compatible Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook ExpressCard 34 and a laptop, or the Sound Blaster Wireless Receiver with Remote Control and your iPod or MP3 player, you can now have full, rich sound at the beach, in the park, on vacations and anywhere else you want to go. And the sound delivered is not like portable laptop speaker sound. The transmitter delivers great sound that can fill a large room with great highs and thundering lows.

Music lovers and gamers will both love the two-way speaker designed for well balanced sound across the complete musical range that is delivered by this precision-tuned set of speakers. Included are tweeters, mid-rangers and a BasXPort low frequency bass blower for whatever sound you enjoy. Most comparably priced speaker sets skip the mid-range, so they don’t deliver the true sound of the recording, game or sports event you are listening to. Not so with this wireless set by GigaWorks, that has great sound production for any situation.

One downfall is the need for a cable to connect the two speakers to each other, but that is not that big of a deal. Just make sure you get a cable long enough for whatever application you are going to enjoy, and you are fine. Also, these speakers don’t run on batteries, so you will need a wall socket. But, that means never running out of sound when your batteries die, and not spending money on expensive battery replacement.

These speakers are a sleek black and look great, and can handle up to 28 watts per channel. Your treble, bass and volume controls are right on the speaker front, with headphone and aux jack also easily reachable. Just make sure you have a Sound Blaster Wireless Receiver with Remote Control or Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook ExpressCard 34 to send the signal, and these Creative GigaWorks T20W Series II Wireless Multimedia Speakers will provide wireless sound for your every need.

Polk Audio Atrium 45 All-Weather Speakers Review

star star star star star

The Polk Audio Atrium 45 All Weather white speaker pair means never having to open your door or window to listen to your favorite sports, music or news when you are on your deck or patio. Especially in summer time, when your AC is running, you don’t want to throw away money watching your home’s cool air go right out the door. These all weather speakers are meant for any climate, and their small, unobtrusive shape and design really fool you when you hear the sound they can put out. Mount out by the pool, on your deck or patio, and get quality, care-free sound without air conditioning the great outdoors.

The Atrium 45 speakers each boast complete stainless steel and brass construction, so you are guaranteed many years of rustproof performance. The enclosed rustproof mounting bracket has swivel mounting and a number of screw hole mounting options for perfect placement just about anywhere. And the full 90 degree rotation with the easy to use adjustable direction knob means mounting in one spot, but then having access to a wide variety of sound delivery angles.

The curved grill and housing offer a very wide sound dispersion for such a small “box”, and they don’t eat up much juice, working on as little as 10 watts per channel while still delivering great sound. Polk Audio developed the Atrium 45s to throw sound out over a large area, but recommends multiple sets if you are looking for high quality sound.

These speakers come in a flat white finish that fits in perfectly and invisibly under eaves, at joining deck corners and on stucco home and pool décor. Have a some color other than white where you want to mount them? The speakers and mounting brackets are paint acceptable right out of the box. Paint them green for your garden, or match the color of your house, it doesn’t affect speaker performance.

The front baffle is sculpted softly, with no sharp corners, and the entire enclosure has rounded edges to prevent diffraction off of hard, sharp edges, and the grilles are rustproof aluminum and give a full fifty-five per cent better high frequency response than similar speakers with dense grilles.

The speaker cabinets are “sealed enclosure” models, which means the acoustics are suspended in full before release, giving very tight bass notes, and these speakers are designed to provide two way sound with a long reach 4.5 in. polymer cone drive and a ¾ in. dome cone tweeter that spreads high notes in a wide pattern thanks to the neodymium magnet. You can talk technical all day, all I know is these speakers throw sound out to cover a wide, deep area, and they sound great through the full range.

5 way binding posts allow for any possible speaker wire connection you have in mind, including the popular, no-slip banana connectors, and their gold plating means no corrosion ever. And if you want toughness, the Polk Audio Atrium 45 Speakers pass military specs for outdoor use, including salt, moisture and corrosion.
If you are looking for a pair of speakers for outdoor permanent mount that you won’t have to replace every 3 or 4 years, the durable Polk Audio Atrium 45 Outdoor Speakers deliver reliability and great sound for under $120, about half the price of similar models.

Audio Unlimited SPK-VELO-003 900MHz Speakers Review

star star star star

The Audio Unlimited SPK-VELO-003 900MHz Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Speakers with remote control and dual power transmitter allow you to move your sound from room to room, or outdoor location. You won’t be bothered by ugly speaker wire looking unsightly and unprofessional and running the risk of tripping your party goers. And these good-looking speakers are weather resistant, so use in wet areas like a dock or pool is fine.

900 MHz Phase Loop Lock circuitry is a fancy way of saying that once they lock into the signal sent from the sending unit, they grab a hold like a bulldog and don’t let go up to 150 feet. And don’t worry about line of sight requirements. The signal is sent through radio waves, not infrared signal, so the music keeps cranking if people move between the speakers and the sending unit, or you want to move them around the corner.

The Audio Unlimited SPK-VELO-003 speakers can even receive a perfect signal through walls. They work just like your cordless 900 Mhz telephone, but won’t interfere with its operation. The transmitting/sending unit accepts all audio inputs, so hook up to your home theater system TV, computer, iPod, MP3 player, Tablet PC and stereo is guaranteed.

What I really liked was the dual power capability. Yes, being powered by batteries is nice, until your batteries die and you realize you have to take a trip to the store for more. They can also be expensive, so if you are going to have the speakers in a permanent location or near a wall outlet, you can use AC power to save on battery usage.

The black finish is unobtrusive and stylish, and the SPK-VELO-003 speakers come in sets of 2 or 4, with single additional speakers optional. Audio Unlimited also offers a full line of Rock Shaped wireless speakers like the SPK-ROCK2 and SPK-VELO2 to augment this powerful duo without cluttering your yard with sound equipment. All your guests will wonder just exactly where that rich sound is coming from.

The speakers are small enough to be portable, and compact and solid enough to deliver great sound, with a weatherproof housing. And there are 3 in. edge woofers coupled with 2 in. cone shaped tweeters to give you respectable highs and lows, but the coolest thing to me is the remote control, giving you treble, bass, balance, volume and on/off power without constantly going back to your music source.

With multiple input options, the ability to send sound 150 feet through walls and other obstacles, weatherproof indoor/outdoor usability, and dual power choice, the Audio Unlimited SPK-VELO-003 900MHz Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Speakers make a nice addition to your outdoor scene. The addition of the remote and pricing availability under $100 makes this a solid choice for the person who loves moving their music, sports or TV programs outside, but likes the versatility to move around. Take them tail-gating and run them off your smartphone to listen to your favorite team, or use them in the backyard for cookouts and get-togethers, the applications truly are limitless for this durable, versatile set of outdoor remote wireless speakers.

Yamaha NS-AW150 2-Way Indoor/Outdoor Speakers Review

star star star star star

The Yamaha NS-AW150 2-Way Indoor/Outdoor Speakers reflect Yamaha”s well-respected name in the audio business. They don’t take up a lot of room, but supply nice sound to any indoor or outdoor gig. If you are looking for booming lows and sparkling highs, the NS-AW150 pair of speakers will rock your party, cookout or neighborhood get-together for under $70. They rate a very respectable 4.7 out of 5 stars for customer satisfaction at Amazon, and carry the reliable Yamaha name. Let’s take a look at these indoor/outdoor rated speakers a little closer.

The compact Yamaha NS-AW150 bookshelf speakers work just as well outdoors as in, which means no bothersome dragging speakers and wires in the house if it starts raining, or at the end of your party when all you want to do is get some rest, and leave the clean-up for the next day. An outdoor rating means your morning coffee on the patio or newspaper by the pool can deliver your favorite music, news or talk radio without setting up and taking down. When the weather turns cold and you are no longer spending time out of doors, simply move these shelf-top speakers indoors and enjoy your music inside.

These two speakers employ a 6.5 inch polypropylene, mica filled, high compliance woofer and 5 inch PEI dome tweeter for great highs and low lows. The Yamaha speaker drivers are made to work well with even low power amplifiers. Technically, this means that that are maxed out for low mass and rigidity, which gives them pretty good sensitivity (80 dB with 2.83V at 1 meter for all you technophobes), but the bottom line in layman’s terms is, they broadcast really good sound from even a modest receiver amp. The Acoustic Suspension housing is sealed, and this prevents speakers that “reverb” their enclosure, and provide “tuneless” bass.

Once more for you audiophiles, a nominal impedance of 6 ohms allows for amps or receivers up to 35 watts per channel, and even allows infrequent peak power of 120 watts total. Translated, if the amp or receiver you use cranks the power up above 35 watts per channel frequently, you can blow these speakers, but if it produce less than 120 watts sporadically, and is usually at 35 watts per channel or less, the Yamaha NS-AW150 bookshelf speakers will work perfectly.

With a frequency response rate of 80 to 40,000 Hz, the bass you get for their size really is pretty surprising. And on the high frequency end, your music is clear and crisp, unusually so for such a small set at this mid-range price.

The only downfall I could find was indoors. Because of the restricted environment, a subwoofer with variable crossover addition is recommended, but if you are buying for outdoor only, they work great, and are priced right for the sound they deliver.

The Yamaha NS-AW150s are magnetically shielded, so you can set near a TV or computer with zero feedback, and 5 different binding posts allow for whatever speaker cable hookup you have, including banana posts. Yamaha even adds two short lengths of wire to get you started.

All in all, if you are looking to spend under $70, but want sound that you would expect to pay more for, the Yamaha NS-AW150 Indoor / Outdoor Bookshelf Speakers are a good buy with a good reputation from a top Company in the business.
